Entrance to the Old Luxor Hotel with Gardens, circa 1910
“Since November [1915] Luxor has been converted into a vast convalescence
station. All the hotels have been requisitioned, only a small part of one of them left
for the civilian public, and in them well over two thousand officers and men are
accommodated at one time. Parties walk or drive out to Karnak to inspect the
temple, and those who can climb the pylons. Others cross the river and explore the
tombs of the kings and queens. At regular intervals there are trips up and down the
Nile, and cinematograph shows and concerts form part of the evening
entertainments.” 13.1
